An annual guide has named the University of Glasgow as the “Scottish university of the year. According to the 2018 Sunday Times “Good University Guide, St Andrews University is the third best in the United Kingdom.

University of the Year

The university also reportedly jumped up nine places among the top 20 universities in the UK. Its jump was reportedly due to improvements in 6 of the list’s nine university performance indicators, such as teaching, graduate prospects and student experience.

According to the annual guide, more than 83% of its students graduated with either a 2:1 or first. It also topped 3 subject rankings: animal science, education and dentistry. It was praised for being able to earn an outstanding reputation for its research as well as provide its students with a good undergraduate experience.

Glasgow also received praise for its plans to expand into the western side of the city and for its newly established partnerships with Canada, China, the US and Hong Kong.

The university came in second in the UK after St Andrews University, which earned its place for being first at broad academic experience and second for overall student satisfaction. The third best Scottish university was Dundee University, followed by Heriot-Watt and Edinburgh universities.

Comments On the Ranking

The Sunday Times “Good University Guide” editor, Alastair McCall, praised the university, saying: “Glasgow has secured the rare double of being both Scottish University of the Year and securing a shortlisting for the UK University of the Year title. Both are well-deserved.”

“It is in the midst of one of the biggest capital spends for a Scottish university – around £1bn over the next decade – with the redevelopment of the former Western Infirmary site, which will reshape the city’s west end.” He said this was an excellent example of how universities could play a transformational role in both individual lives and in its broader community.

Glasgow’s vice chancellor and principal, Professor Anton Muscatelli, pointed out that this comes just weeks following Time Higher Education ranking Glasgow as the 80th best university worldwide.

Muscatelli said the university’s ranking is a “real tribute” to their students’ and staff’s endeavour and hard work. He said he looks forward to the university’s future as it expands and redevelops its facilities all over the world, in order to “further confirm Glasgow as a global centre for learning, teaching and research.”
