A student athlete at the University of the Cumberlands in Kentucky was reportedly killed in a shooting in Charlotte this weekend. Police are still investigating the incident have not yet made any arrests.
A student baseball player, Zachary Finch, 21, at the University of the Cumberlands in Kentucky was reportedly killed during the tragic shooting that happened in Charlotte this weekend. He was in his final year and played for the university’s Patriots baseball team.
According to WCNC reports, Zach was pronounced dead in an apartment on Farmer Street in Charlotte. His family was notified of the incident. The shooting reportedly happened at about 1:30pm on Sunday. The police are still investigating the details of the incident, and are yet to arrest any suspects for the crime. Police are also investigating whether his shooter was someone he may have known.
The university is offering counseling services for all who were affected, including students, staff and faculty. “[The services] be obtained through Jodi Carroll, MSW, LCSW, Director of Behavioral Health, at 606-539-3553.”
Police are asking that anyone with information that may be helpful to call homicide at 704-334-1600.
So far, there have been 43 reported homicides in Charlotte this year.
Comments On His Death
Zach’s university Head Coach, Brad Shelton, said: “He was kindhearted, intelligent and well spoken. His teammates and I loved him.”
“[He] was just a tremendous teammate, so well-spoken and friendly. Well-mannered and an excellent student. Just really a pleasure to be around. He was a funny kid. He always had some funny saying or something and he would have at practice and the guys just enjoyed being around,” Shelton continued. “So you can imagine this is hard for our guys.”
The university Student Services’ Vice President, Emilt Coleman, said: “Zach went out of his way to say hello to others; he was a joy to be around. He will be deeply missed by our campus community.”
“He was always thinking of others. He was always wanting to make sure that others were taken care of. He thought beyond himself. That Christian servant heart,” she continued.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Zach Finch,” said the President of the university, Larry Cockrum. “Zach was an incredible young man with a very bright future. We ask the entire Cumberlands family to join in praying for Zach’s family and friends during this terribly difficult time.”
