A University of Tulsa student has been arrested and charged with sexual assault of another student.
Lesley Nchanji, a University of Tulsa student, has been arrested and charged for sexual assault of another student. According to the court documents, the 19-year-old victim said that the incident happened on June 10th when she was in an apartment on campus for a birthday party.
She reported that she drank around 8 vodka shots, and that the last thing she remembers was that she was looking for her bag. She then remembers waking up the next day in Nchanji’s bed, with her clothes torn and in pain.
According to Jillian Phippen, a Tulsa Police sergeant: “She knew immediately that this was not a good situation and that something very bad had happened.”
She said that she completely “blacked out” and had no memory of what happened.
Nchanji, when questioned by the police officers, said that he began to take the woman to her dorm room, but she was too drunk that she couldn’t tell him where that was and didn’t have her key. He said he then took her back to his apartment, “threw the victim over his back and carried her to the bad,” according to his affidavit.
“She was just wanting to get back to her apartment; however, she couldn’t really figure out where she was or what was going on,” Phippen said.
Nchanji said that “he was scared” because she was “way, way drunk,” vomiting and breathing heavily. The police said that he admitted to “having oral sex” but that nothing else happened.
“We have a lot of young females that are completely unconscious when they are sexually assaulted, and for some reason that is a really big draw for these suspects,” Phippen said.
“When you have a completely unconscious female, clearly she cannot consent.”
Several witnesses from the party also recalled that the victim was incredibly intoxicated that night. A man also said that he spoke to him the day after and that he said he had never seen a person that drunk, and that she was shaking “and looked like a dead body.”
The University on the Incident
The University issued a statement regarding the incident, saying:
“The University of Tulsa is investigating a report of a student who was sexually assaulted by another student earlier this month. TU’s Office of Student Affairs is reviewing the report in accordance with the student code of conduct. The alleged assailant was a TU student-athlete at the time of the incident and was arrested by Tulsa Police. He has been dismissed from the soccer team and is banned from campus pending the outcome of the university investigation.”
